A New Blog

So I’m starting a blog. Again. I’ve attempted it a few times before but never really put much effort into maintaining them.

Then why start another one? The short answer is that my brother died. On September 13, 2020 my younger brother, Brian, passed away suddenly at the age of 38. Brian was just 16-months younger than me and his death has hit me extraordinarily hard. I keep thinking about all the things he’ll never do – the jokes he’ll never tell, the stories he’ll never write, the brilliant light inside him that will never get to fully shine.

I’m far less entertaining or talented than my brother but I do have a lot of things to say and I think I have a somewhat natural talent for writing that I’ve long wanted to polish. I’ve been made acutely aware that none of us knows how much time we have in this life. If writing is something that I want to pursue, I feel like I better get on it. So, a blog. Is blogging still even really a thing? Haha. I guess I’ll find out.

I’ve called the site Magpie’s Menagerie. Magpie is a cherished nickname given to me as a teen by a lifelong friend. “Menagerie” is defined as “a strange or diverse collection of people or things.” As I am expecting to write on a variety of topics, this shall be a strange and diverse collection of my thoughts and musings. I thought it had a nice ring to it – I’m a sucker for alliteration.

Thank you to anyone who’s read this far! I’m hoping to add new posts at least once a week (hopefully more) going forward so check back soon!
